What Causes Pain In The Hands While On Imuran For Ulcerative Colitis?

Hello, I have been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis about 18 months ago. I cannot get an appointment with any rheumatologist until September 15. My GI has me taking Imuran 50 mg one tablet daily. For the past 6 weeks or more, my hands have been achy and getting worse. The finger feel like they ratchet into position. For the first time, my labs from 3 weeks ago showed ribonucleoprotein ab ( RNPABS) at 5.8. Is this caused by azothiaprine/Imuran? Thank you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Let me tell you that apart from helping in ulcerative colitis, imuran may also cause muscle and joint pain and that is why you are experiencing pain in your hands and stiff finger. So till you see the rheumatologist, you can take NSAID such as ibuprofen for the pain.

PHope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Prabhash Verma, General & Family Physician
