What Causes Pain In Right Ear And Sore Tongue?

Hi there. I have had a pain in my right ear that comes and goes over the last 4 months and now the right side of my tongue is so sore that I do not want to swallow or talk much. Are they related? I have been on tamoxifen for 1 year and pantaprazole. Thanks for any thoughts...

Hello,

I can understand your concern. Sometimes pain of oral cavity is felt in ear or pain of ear is felt in oral cavity known as referred pain due to same nerve supply of both the areas. Thus, we can assume that these pains are related as they are both on the same side.

My first doubt is for the presence of infected or impacted third molar/wisdom tooth in the lower right jaw. This tooth is notorious for causing such pains and the pain typically comes and goes on its own for long periods depending on the eruption force it experiences. You should visit a dentist for examination and x-ray of the third molar area.

Alternatively, a tooth with rough or sharp edge that keeps rubbing over the side of tongue may cause sore tongue and related pains. This may require detection of such edges by dentist and their rounding off.

In absence of dental pathology, I would advise you to visit an ENT specialist to look for presence of chronic infection.

I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HCM. Let me know if you have follow up questions.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
