What Causes Pain In Ankle When Stressing It To Sprint?
My 15 yr old son was playing HS football. A player landed on his right calf causing his right ankle to twist. He sat out rest of the game. The ankle swelled some on the outside part just below the ankle bone. There was no bruising. 4 weeks later he is still having issues with it when trying to sprint. He advises that his ankle starts to hurt when stressing it to sprint. I am guessing bone spurs?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement, Dr. Saurabh Gupta's Response
Hello, Thanks for your query. From description , it seems he might developed ligamentous sprain over ankle . Now after 4 weeks if pain is severe ,I would suggest getting this evaluated by an orthopedician for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate management. He may get the MRI of the area affected under his/her guidance. To get relief from the pain and for quick healing: 1. Do hot fomatation at the site. 2. Apply local anti-inflammatory gel 2-3 times a day. 3. Take anti-inflammatory drugs like Ibuprofen to reduce pain and local swelling or inflammation. I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query. Take care
