What Causes Pain Around The Thyroid Cartilage While Swallowing?

My thyroid cartilege area hurts every time I swallow. The pain is mild but constant on every swallow whether or not I am eating or drinking. It just started happening while i was drinking a glass of water. When i palpate the cartilage, it seems looser than I remember. However, I do not palpate my thyroid cartilage often.

Hello,

If the pain has been there for less then a week and is not getting worse and you do not have problems with local swelling or the breathing very likely this is a muscular strain of the muscles of the neck that might have happened when you felt the pain while swallowing and drinking the glass of water.

Generally what might help is taking paracetamol and ibuprofen every 6-8 hours after food and trying to not traumatize the area or strain the muscles further being careful while drinking and eating and not stretching the muscles of the area.

Normally you should feel better within a week. If it is lasting longer or is any worse it might be safer to see your doctor.

I hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
