What Causes Pain And Numbness In The Hand?

I have had sharp pain, numbness, and tingling in both hands. believed to be nerve related, pinched nerve not fully ruled out. Started about a month ago. Gabapentin prescribed, but has done little to help sharp pain. Pain can be limited to only half of the hand, ie thumb through middle finger, rest are not effected. sharp pain can alternate one day it is the right hand, next day it is the left, w/ other hand not effected. can happen at night, waking me up from deep sleep. sharp pain can happen with out notice. The pain can radiate up the arm to the wrist, at times to elboy, up median nerve. This was rapid onset, no injuries to cause the pain in the hands. at best, the hands can be numb, with limited fine motor control on some but not all fingers Unable to see a Neurologist for at least 6 months. Am concerned over loss of hand fine and gross motor control and use. as well and the intense pain above a 10 on a scale of 1-10 Deep tissue massage of hands helpful, but not when experiencing sharp pain, cannot even touch hand when in such pain. History of Diabetes type 1, however had Pancreas transplant 11 years ago and still working strong, Hgb a1c has been at 4.9 (Jan. 2017.

Thanks for posting your query on HealthcareMagic.
Usually this is self limiting and there is no specific cause but if this persist then various causes for arm numbness may persist like dehydration, diabetes, hypothyroidism, menopause, lack of B complex vitamins.
You may also have nerve compression problems which was suspected in your prior consultations which must have aggravated, however at what level it varies and needs clinical evaluation, with nerve conduction studies with or without MRI. It is very common to get such types of numbness and pain in stress and in deep anxiety state, however to be on safe side, you should consult a doctor and get your cardiac status checked along with other relevant investigations for the causes as mentioned above.
Hope this helps and provides answers to your question. I wish you good health
