What Causes Pain And Numbness In The Buttocks And Knees?

I am a 61 year old female who went to the doctor 2 weeks ago with radiating butt and right hip pain which had been ongoing for about a week and making it difficult to walk. I was diagnosed with piriformis syndrome after stating that the symptoms started a day after going to the gym. I was given a 6 day cortisone pack and anti-inflammatory medication. Since then the pain has increased and I still cannot walk any distance without limping and having extreme pain in my butt/hip. In the past 10 days I have also developed numbness in my entire right shin area from the knee down to the foot. Can piriformis syndrome cause the numbness? Should I return to the doctor and/or physical therapist?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

* As per my surgical experience, the severe pain with piriformis syndrome responds very well with stretching exercises in terms of
- four point stretch and
- knee to chest stretch exercises
* I would recommend to consult your physical therapist for the same along with medications.

Hope I have answered your query.
