I notice platelet count reduce and have numbness on my tongue after having Plavix 75 mg for last 2 months . I had Brilinta for 1 year after having stent in 2013 Dec., then I was on aspirin 81mg up to 2016 June. with aspirin I did not have these side effects. What difference it makes taking aspirin or Plavix?

Hello,

I can understand your concern. Plavix is a drug that comes under the group of Clopidogrel. It inhibits platelet activation and by that helps in preventing blood clot formation in the blood vessels.

Aspirin also inhibits platelet activation but the mechanism of action is different than of Clopidogrel. Clopidogrel is usually given in patients who have recently suffered stroke or heart attack.

The numbness you are experiencing on the tongue is due to the side effect of Plavix. When the dose will be reduced or the medicine will be stopped, the tongue will regain the sensations and not feel numb.

However, if the discomfort is untolerable due to that, you should consult your cardiologist and discuss if the molecule of blood thinner can be changed or dosage can be modified.

I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. I wish you feel better soon.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
