What Causes Numbness In The Legs?

I am having numbness in my legs down the outside of my legs. it is to the right of my knee on my right leg and left side of my knee on my left leg. It started with the left leg and was accompanied by stinging pain like needles. Left side is now just numb but right side started with the same pain but worse than left side and followed by numbness. Some numbness for years in toes, mainly left foot. L4/L5 fusion in 2004.
