What Causes Numbness In The Ear While Suffering From An Ear Infection?

My son complained of an ear ache and muffled hearing last Saturday. He had been on vacation and we thought it might be water in his ear from the amusement park or a sinus infection. He was taking a Alavert for allergies and I gave him some Alieve for 2 days. It cleared up but now he is saying it is back but doesn t hurt. He says it feels numb and its liked his ear is clogged (hearing muffled). Could this a serious issue? I plan to call his doctor Monday but Im worried thats to long to wait

Hi Dear,

Welcome to Health Care Magic Team.

Understanding your concern.

As per your query you have numbness in the ear while suffering from an ear infection, you need to worry about it as it is very common occurrence after ear infection. Numbness in ear indicated that infection has affected the nerve . Your symptoms are similar to Otitis Media i.e middle ear infection and as infection will be treated numbness will go away . I would suggest you to consult ENT specialist for proper diagnosis. Doctor may examine by otoscopic means to check level of infection. Doctor may prescribe antibiotics amoxicillin at least for a week along with decongestants. Avoid touching or pricking it with any sharp object and maintain hygiene of ear canal. Put Otogesic ear drops. You should go for audiometer testing as well to check hearing level.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
