What Causes Numbness In Feet?

My dad is 88 and he has learned to live with numb feet. Recently I learned that numb feed not only effects his balance (which is not good, even tho he uses a cane most of the time) but also other cognitive functions. His smalltown MD told him the numbness was just aging. Is it? He does not have diabetes and the numbness has not changed over the past couple of years. But it is so severe that he sometimes does not know if his shoes are on and he walks off with just one on. Thank you. DP
