What Causes Numbness In Feet And Ankles Radiating To The Calves?

Hello and thank you for your help, (please forgive my grammar as English is my second language) For more than six months I am suffering of a very painful issue, very rare symptoms ...I have a partial numbness in my feet (bilateral) around my ankles and gradually was escalating up to my calves this discomfort makes me difficult to walk... The ball of my feet are very sensitive, feel like stabbing pain and burns too, my toes are so painful same as my heels. In the morning it is hard for me to get up and go like before. I am female, 49 years old, active person until August 2015, but now that is history. I am feeling miserable because I am not able to do things that I could do before. The strength on my legs are worst; I couldn t even use the stairs or stand up on a first grade student chair, I can t be able to stand on my tiptoes plus my balance is getting worst day by day. I went to different physicians, podiatry, neurology, physical therapist, and have done lab work, x-rays, MRI, Thyroid check up and no one can figure out the problem finally this week i went to an endocrinologist who order and MRI LUMBAR SPINE and a Thyroid ultrasound ... I got a result of an MRI Lumbar Spine without contrast and the findings are: 1 Dehydration and bulging of the L5-S1 disc effacing the thecal sac 2 The remainder of the lumbar spine has normal MRI appearance. My question: Can this findings be the cause of my partial numbness that prevents me walking normal and loose strength on my legs and balance? No to mention that I started to have these tingling/numbness sensations on my fingers and hands, please advice

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have numbness in feet and ankles radiating to the calves. Well there can be many reasons for symptoms you mention in query like soft tissue injury , hematoma , nerve injury or compression . It can also occur due to condition likw sciatica .I would suggest you to consult orthopedic surgeon for proper diagnosis . Doctor may order CT scan , MRI along with nerve conduction test . Doctor may prescribe anti inflammatory along with nerve supplement and recommend physical therapy . Doctor may also recommend surgery in severe nerve damage . For now keep your leg elevated while sleeping and apply warm compresses several times a day . Doctor may also refer you to neurologist for neuropathy or other nerve problem.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
