What Causes Nausea After An Abdominal Supracervical Hysterectomy?

im 6 days post abdominal supracervical hysterectomy. Im feeling a bit nauseous in the afternoon for some reason. I did deal with a lot of constipation going into surgery due to taking Iron. It got so much worse after surgery and I finally (in addition to taking the stool softeners and senokot) had to have a suppository and enema. It helped but did not solve the problem. I have taken more liquid senokot and it (i thought) solved the constipation but I ve not had a stool today and feel a bit nauseous. Am I making an assumption that this is causing my nausea or does this sound about right? I took 2 senakot last night but had no bm today. Do you think I should take more? I can take up to 4 per day. I just want to be cleaned out so it does not hurt to go. I really had to strain yesterday and I dont want to hurt myself

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted the history abdominal supra-cervical hysterectomy 6 days back, had constipation due to excessive iron for preparing for surgery, took senna, laxative and when were not sufficient also took suppositories and enema which helped but not completely, still has nausea and feel to evacuate completely.
There are many reasons that you can have nausea:
Iron itself causes gastritis.
Constipation and such intestinal problems cause reflex nausea.
Senna and laxatives are known to cause nausea.
I would advise you the following in such a situation.
Get an X-ray of the abdomen done and if fecoliths are present insist for Saline and soap enema till the colon is cleared completely followed by mild laxatives.
Stop Iron at the moment.
Take a PPI like Omeprazole and antacid if required. Domperidone helps for nausea too.
Take care.
