Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Mucous And Transparent Brownish Discharge From The Anus?
My father is 76 years old. He has been having a bothersome problem of mucous/watery and white/transparent/brownish discharge from the anus for the past two months. Consultations with two to three doctors including an ayurveda doctor revealed the possible cause of the problem to be prolapsed piles. However, none of the doctors could give a good solution for the problem. A gastroenterologist suggested three medicines of which I remember only two as my father also has poor appetite issues: 1. VSL-3 2. Rabonik My question is will the VSL-3 really help with getting rid of the bothersome discharge problem? Is there any permanent solution for the problem? If yes, what is it? Is it a non-surgical solution? Two doctors we consulted did not take interest in a colonoscopy citing daddy s old age as a reason. The sigmoidoscopy looks normal though. I have attached it here. We are all totally depressed and really wish we could just fix this problem right away. Tired of seeing so many doctors!
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted the history about your Father having mucous/watery and white/transparent/brownish discharge from the anus for the past two months, prolapsed piles, consulted many Doctors, Gastroenterologist gave VSL- and Rabonik. Sigmoidoscopy looks normal. I would advise you the following: Since there is change in the stool and have discharge, the foremost thing is to send the sample of stools for 3 consecutive days for lab to see if there are other elements like colitis, infection, intolerance and soon. Colonoscopy and CT scan of the abdomen to rule out any dirverticulitis, cancer and so on. Therapeutic trial of an antibiotic and metronidazole should be given at least for 5 days. Piles should get treatment then as per the grading in the form of banding, injection or surgery as will be advised by the General Surgeon.
