Question: What is the best medicine to use for pouchitis. A 27 year old male was operated and has a j-pouch because he had Ulcerative Colitis. He has a sigmoidoscopy and has moderate inflammation. Biopsy came back good.

Please note..

1. Pouchitis will usually subside on its own..
Better to start on oral antibiotics.
Preferably, Amox combination..

2. Let me tell you, as a surgeon I have seen lot of cases of Pouchitis and all they need is
A. Reassurance
B. Good nutrition
C. Correction of Electrolytes
D. Good Stoma care..

With this.. The patient should be fine, because even the Biopsy report is fine.
