What Causes Lower Abdominal Pain, Constipation, 5-9 Bowel Movements When Having Diverticulitis?

Yes need someone to answer a few questions. My new Dr. did not say much so I need to find out some things. He (Dr.) scheduled me for a colonoscopy. I have not had one in 5 yrs. or so. I am having severe pains in my lower left abdomen that goes straight thru to my back. The pain is so intense at times I have been tempted to go to an ER. I have diverticulitis and I am not a bit contipated. In fact I have at least 5-9 BM s a day. I am careful of what I eat. Also I have acute acid reflux and a hiatel hernia. I have had a hysterectomy many years ago so I know it is not my ovaries. Please give me some ideas on what this might be. Could I possibly just have an infected or inflamed colon. I am really very worried and my new Dr. did not explain anything. Had to get a new MD since we have moved and could not keep my Dr. of 15 yrs. Please be honest with me and give me some kind of idea what all this pain could be. I just need to have some answers. Thank you for being kind enough to help me by answering some questions. God Bless

Hello,
Thank you for asking your question at health care magic.

The symptoms oof lower left abdominal pain along with diarrhea especially with previous history of diverticulitis raises the concern for recurring diverticulitis especially if the past episode was managed medically with antibiotics.
Diverticulitisis is infection of Diverticulum which is a small outpouching from the colon.First episodes of diverticulitis are treated just with antibiotics, but repeated episodes need surgery.
Diverticulitisis definitely need to be ruled out first before undergoing a colonoscopy or else it can result in perforated bowel.

Other possibilities include inflammatory bowel disease, ovarian cause of pain like complicated cyst/ torsion (I understand that you had undergone hysterectomy before,So I would like to know if ovaries were also removed then), urinary tract infections, stones etc.

All these conditions need medical attention and appropriate care without which can lead to complications. I recommend that you go the nearest emergency room.

Hope I was able to answer your question.
Please feel free to address any more concerns.
Regards,
Dr.Lekshmi
