What Causes Knee Veins Swelling With Prominence And Throbbing?

I had a sudden swelling of my veins beneath and to the left of my knee on the left leg. I was uncomfortable and the veins became pronounced, throbbing, and hot. I went to an urgent care and they sent me to a hospital for a D-dimmer test. It came back negative, showing no clotting. By the time I was home, a bruise began developing that is now 4 inches and really ugly. The dr. office called and said the tests were negative, but I don't know what might be wrong. Do I need to be careful until I can get to my Primary Health Dr. on Monday? Thanks, Alison

Hi Allison,

Sorry to hear about the discomfort. I see a lot of similar patients in my office for your complaints. I'd still be concerned you'd have a blood clot in your leg, and a d-dimer level isn't a very reliable test and it is one that I hardly use, in all honesty. I'd recommend you get an ultrasound of the leg that is affected to look for a deep vein thrombosis (blood clot). The other cause of this can be due to varicose veins, which can be uncomfortable, but do not cause any serious problems. If you don't have a blood clot on ultrasound, I'd recommend you start wearing compression stockings (you can usually find these at any pharmacy) and see if that helps your symptoms. I don't think you need to be extra careful, but if you develop any shortness of breath or the pain becomes excruciating, I'd seek immediate medical attention.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.
