What Causes Itching, swelling And Redness In The Vagina?

started itching on the outside of my vagina Monday, and me and my husband had sex. It was painful so I knew that there was something wrong. Tuesday I bought Monistat 1, and used it. I continued to itch and burn down there. I checked to see how it looked and it was very red. I decided to go to the urgent care Thursday and it sort of felt maybe a little bit better. The Dr. did an exam and checked for Bv, but he thought it was a yeast infection. He said it was red and irritated. Well, later that evening it felt like it flared up and itched a lot worse. The whole night I was waking up itching and it hadn't before woken me up like that. The next day, I checked myself again with a mirror and it was very very swollen around the hole area entrance, red, and burned and sore. That night I soaked in some sea salt and warm water, and decided I would put some monistat itch cream on afterward. What a mistake! It burned me up! I had to wipe it off and resoak again, and it still was hurting afterward. So, I don't know what to do. I was prescribed Fluconozole two of them, and took them both. Still today I am not any better with the swelling, and all the other symptoms. Could it be from the latex gloves the Dr used to exam me, or the monistat? I know something aggravated it the day I came home from the Dr. I tried calling them today and the lady said she would have the physician call back. But nothing yet. A little concerned.

OBGYN 's  Response
I am so sorry that you are so uncomfortable. I doubt it is from the latex gloves, unless you know that you have a sensitivity to latex. If you have a history of latex sensitivity, then you should use a steroid cream like hydrocortisone and it should subside as long as you avoid latex. If you usually have no problem with latex, then it may be a yeast infection, but then it should have responded to the medicines you already took. I would recommend that you see a gynecologist if this problem continues. The swelling could be any number of things, from a swollen Bartholin's gland (a small gland that is at the opening of the vagina that can get swollen and eve infected) to a herpes outbreak, to a severe resistant yeast infection or many other things. Usually, if an experienced gynecologist does an exam, he/she should be able to figure it out pretty quickly and find you a solution to your problem. I hope this helps answer your question, please let me know if you have any more questions.
