I am a 64 year old woman who has not had any sexual involvement for over 2 years. I started itching inside my labia and when I asked my doctor about it she said that it was due to dryness because of my age. I recently started really being bothered, especially at night, with itching. The doctor prescribed Premarin 2 to 3 times a week. She suggested using an antihistamine for itching, and ice packs. So far none of these things have been helpful. Is there possibly something else going on because sometimes the itch feels deep under the skin near the pelvic bones.
Hello, Thanks for trusting us with your health concern. It is true that dryness of the skin and mucosa due to lack of hormones can lead to itching. In addition to what you have been prescribed by your consultant, use of moisturizers comprising of olive oil often gives dramatic relief to the skin around the genital region. Also, avoid synthetic, tight undergarments and use loose-fitting cotton ones. Allow proper ventilation to the area. Take plenty of liquids. See if any irritation is being caused by the soaps and deodorants you are using. Also check your blood sugar levels. Plan further management accordingly. Take care.
