What Causes Involuntary Closing Of Eye Lids After Undergoing Chemotherapy For Colon Cancer?

Hi. Im a 47 yr old female that went through colon cancer treatment. I finished my chemo 2 months ago. At that time, my eye lids started to close on their own, won t stay open. It s now a battle all day long off and on to keep my eyes open. At times, they will be fine (an hour or so), but then they revert to closing. It s effecting driving and my work. I saw an eye MD and she couldn t find anything won t with my eyes, they looked healthy to her. I m at my wits end. Searching everywhere for answers, but no one has heard of this.

Hello,

Your condition is called bilateral ptosis. A few conditions where it is seen are Horner syndrome, partial or complete CN-III palsy, myasthenia gravis, malignancy or infection of the superior eyelid, conjunctival cul-de-sac or anterior orbit, and chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia.

Vincristine used in chemotherapy also causes bilateral ptosis. In your case, it may be the chemotherapy with Vincristine that might have caused drooping of eyelids. Please consult your oncologist and ask him if you were given Vincristine for cancer chemotherapy. Combined treatment with pyridoxine and pyridostigmine would correct ptosis in 2 weeks.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
