What Causes Intermittent Elbow Pain?

50 yr old male with heart disease is complaining of tennis elbow. The pain comes and goes depending on daily activities. He is a painter so elbow pain could be caused by this. My concern is he just had quad heart bypass last December and is still smoking. Is this something he should have checked by a doctor? He did get a cortisone shot in this elbow last November.

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Pain of tennis elbow is quite clear cut, it's localized to one site, increases on movement and painful to pressure. Heart pain will not be like this. So I think there should not be any confusion between these two pain. Also, he should quit smoking. This is very important otherwise he will have another heart attack which he may or may not survive or will have another bypass. Regular walking and healthy lifestyle will help.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Sagar Makode
