During the first trimester ther is slow gastric emptying due to the effect of hormones, specially, progesterone. So, flatulence and meteorism are frequent because food tends to stay at the stomach for hours, creating gases from local digestion. You alsomget heartburn because gastric acid tends to reflux from the stomach to the mouth. This will improve after 16th week of pregnancy. Tips? Chew food very well, avoid protein meals in large quantities, drink water while eating and split meals to make them smaller and frequent (eat about 6 times a day). this will help a lot. if your MD prescribes it, you coul use Metoclopramide to enhance gastric emptying and reduce gastric reflux. good luck!
