What Causes High BP Despite Taking Crestor?

I am 69 years old and have been dealing with high blood pressure and high cholesterol for many years, taking Norvasc 10mg, Coversyl Plus 8/2.5 mg and Crestor 10mg. On November 28th my doctor increased Norvasc to 20mg and Crestor to 20mg daily in an effort to lower BP and cholesterol. My BP readings are still high, usually in the 150 s over 70 s. I m 5 7 and weigh 185. My late father had high BP and suffered a stroke and heart attack.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice. Since you are having family history of high BP you may be genetically more prone to get High BP. Other reasons are:

1. Sedentary lifestyle, lack of physical exercise
2. Being overweight
3. High salt in diet
4. Smoking, alcohol consumption
5. High fatty, oily food in diet

These are all some of the reasons why your blood pressure is not coming down inspite of medications. You need to do lifestyle modifications:

1. Exercise for at least half an hour per day.
2. Weight reduction
3. Less salt in food
4. Less fat, oil in diet
5. Diet rich in fibres
6. Cut down on smoking, alcohol
7. Stress free lifestyle- learn meditation, relaxation techniques. Learn breathing techniques
8. Follow this regularly for 21 days.

It is said that anything you practice regularly for 21 days becomes a habit.

Hope I have answered your question. Feel free to contact me if you have any more questions. I ll be glad to help you.

With warm regards,
Dr. Sanjay Kini
