What Causes Heavy Menstruation With Severe Cramping?

I am 44 and in the last 2 1/2 months had excessive menstrual flow and heavy bleeding. Also sever cramping. Ultra sound showed a cyst on the left ovary and a thickening of the uterus lining. I am scheduled for a biopsy what exactly are they attempting to determine with this biopsy and what more than likely is the cause of this?

Hi

Heavy bleeding can be due to hormonal changes in the body or due to thickening of the lining of the womb. Whenever the lining of the womb is found thick on the ultrasound a biopsy is performed to rule out malignancy / cancer. In most cases the problem is due to hormonal imbalance but biopsy is still done to be sure.

Thanks
