Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My 17 year old daughter was prescribed Clindamycin and she took 2 doses yesterday with no issue however today after her first and second pill she had a sore throat and heartburn. Should she discontinue the medicine. She is taking it as a precaution for a possible infection for a pilonidal cyst that is draining/leaking that we are waiting to see a surgeon to see if it needs to be removed.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Based on the history your daughter seems to be suffering from the side effects of stomach acid reflux caused by the antibiotic Clindamycin. Don’t stop the Clindamycin without first talking with her doctor. Continue to complete the course of the antibiotic as prescribed. To prevent the stomach acid reflux please see that:
1. She does't lie down right after she takes the drug Clindamycin.
2. She should stay upright, for instance, for at least 30 minutes after taking the antibiotic.
3. She takes over-the-counter heartburn remedies like antacids or proton pump inhibitors.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
