Noted the history about your son and understood your concerns.
Since your son has undergone surgery for hernia it is possibly related to the hardness of stomach he is getting.
There is no history related to bloating, nausea or vomiting hence the most probable cause for getting hardness in the stomach can be related to the
hematoma or
cellulitis of the anterior abdominal wall.
I would advise you the following in such a situation:
Get a clinical examination by a
General Surgeon and also insist for high resolution of
ultrasonography and X-ray of the abdominal wall in standing position.
This will the correct diagnosis so that an appropriate management can be done. If there is simply en edema an anti-inflammatory medications will help resole the issues.
If there is a collection or an abscess, it may need an
incision and drainage.
Hence the treatment will be as per the cause thus found.
Till then ask your son to take strict rest to give time for proper healing.
