I was diagnosed with Hashimoto s last year after going to an Endo because my hair was thinning. TSH levels were normal, but antibodies were high. I am a 67 y/o woman. Started Levo at 0.25mg, raised to 0.50 at 6 months. Endo raised to 62.5mg (1/2 of 125mg) at 10 months to see if that would help stop continuing hair loss. Hair loss continues, my only symptom,... tho now starting to have memory lapses ! What do you think is happening ? I also just heard that alopecia is a separate auto-immune disease. Is that true ?...or just a side effect of Hashi s...or a side effect of Levo ? P.S. I just found out alopecia is an auto-immune disease...and this recent revelation this week at Yale University : http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-0000/Yale-scientists-successfully-use-arthritis-drug-regrow-completely-bald-mans-hair.html Thanks anyway....
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Alopecia is nothing but loss of hair. There is a special type of alopecia called Alopecia areata which is an autoimmune condition. Both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism can cause alopecia. So my opinion is that treating or controlling your thyroid problem automatically cures your hair thinning. But if you want any medication, you can go for Minoxidil lotion/solution application on scalp.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
