What Causes Grainy Stools?

I am having a diverticulitis flare up. I have not eaten anything yet as liquids make my stomach a thunderstorm of violent noises and bing on diarrhea. I have had diarrhea for 5 days. At times the stool looks like a small pile of sand. Can you tell me about this grainy, sandy stool? It is brownish green in color. I am 45 yo female. 5 11 weight is 215. Thank you

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted the history and understood the concerns.

Since you are a known case of diverticulitis with flare up, the stools will surely change its form, color, consistency and so on.
A proper course of an antibiotic and Metronidazole should help you.
Take probiotics.
Send the stool and blood for lab tests.
Review Ct scan of abdomen can tell about the present status of flare up of diverticulitis and can guide for further management.
If there is any pus collection you may need surgery.
Change the foods and beverages to suit your intestines.
Take rest.
Have regular follow up with your Doctors and Specialists so that timely actions can be taken to reduce the complications.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant,
General Surgeon
