What Causes Frontal Headache And Noise Sensitivity After A Head Injury?

Hi Doctor, My father had an accident 4 days before , fell on his back hitting back head on the floor. he became unconscious and was on observation for 24 hours. Doctors (Neuro specialist & family doctor) ruled out CT/MRI/Xray and told it's not needed now. Last two days he is having headache on his forefront. He is irritated by noise and sound and prefer to be alone most of the time. Is it normal or should we take him for further testing. He is taking food , and no vomiting and he don't have any amnesia.

Hello. Thanks for asking from HCM.

I can understand your concern. It is good that his investigations are normal. Head injury can cause headache which increases due to noisy sound, bright light, stress. It may be the reason behind his irritable behaviour as his headache increases and he becomes uncomfortable.

Another reason could be "Concussion". It is a type of blunt head injury followed by unconsciousness and memory deficit for incidence without any evidence of bleed or damage to brain. It can cause headache, memory deficit, irritability, confusion for few days. Recovery is the rule. Symptoms usually subside in 10 to 14 days.

For relief, you can follow few tips

: Avoid pressure at injury site
: Keep his head at higher level than chest
: You can take painkiller like Diclofenac sodium after proper prescription
: Avoid noisy sound, bright light, physical and mental stress
: Still no relief or his symptoms increase, you should consult doctor. Repeat scan may be advised to rule out delayed bleed or oedema. Further treatment will be decided after report.

Hope it will help you.

Thanks. Take care.
