What Causes Frequent Stools In A Child And How To Treat It?

My son is 4 years old and he suffered from bladder injection about 8 days back. After the treatment was completed, he now has frequent bowel movement and sits for long in the toilet and visits 3-4 times a day. Can you please advice what could be the reason and treatment for it?

Hi,
Welcome to Hcm,
Few possibilities can be considered with these symptoms:
1. Gastroenteritis which probably a viral infection of the gut.
2. Dysentery, bacterial infection, especially if there is blood in the stools and aassociated with fever.
3. Can be as a side effect of medications given for bladder infection especially if augmentin-amoxycillin group of drugs given..in that case you need to stop those medicine aand child will get better.
4. Lastly, it can be non specific and will resolve on few days.
You need to check if he is passing good quantity of stools everytime else a possibility of constipation should be thought.
Get a stool routine examination done if its loose and watery and rule out infection to start off with. Happy to clear further doubts. Take care .
