What Causes Foul Spotting After Discontinuing Vagifem Tablets?
I am having some spotting of old blood after discontinuing vagifem. Is that a side effect of discontinuing that medication? Also when that occurs there seems to be a slight odor. All tests at my doctor performed came back normal. (cultures, pap and ultrasound)
Vagifem is an Oestradiol (Oestrogen) product which is used vaginally for menopausal symptoms. One of the side effects of Vagifem is the possibility of breakthrough bleeding.
Breakthrough bleeding is breaking of the uterine lining (endometrium) when there is imbalance between the endometrial growth and the supporting hormones (Oestrogen and/or Progesterone). When you discontinue Vagifem, whatever the endometrium has grown due to Oestradiol is now deprived of it. This would lead to some amount of bleeding. Since the endometrium at menopausal age is very scanty, the bleeding also will be scanty. If such bleeding stays for some time inside the uterine cavity, it will come out later as a brown bleeding (old blood).
However, such discharge should not have any foul odour. It may indicate some vaginal infection. Please report to your Gynaecologist and get examined. Since at menopausal age, the natural vaginal protection provided by thick vaginal walls gets reduced, vagina becomes more vulnerable for infections. Oestradiol which was trying to maintain the growth of the vaginal wall cells has been withdrawn leading to vaginal wall thinning now.
I hope this explains you the modus operandii of the discharge you are having.
