What Causes Fluctuating Pulse Rate Post Exercising?

I jogged 2 miles. The highest pulse was 140. 15 minutes after sitting my heart rate raised to 175. Slowly, 45 minutes later it was at 70. I am 65, female, take 50 mgs of thyroid medication in the morning,133 lbs and run every other day. Do I have a problem.

Thanks for your question. I can very well understand your concern.

Your mentioned heart rates are the normal physiological response to the exercise. During exercise there is a increase oxygen demand of exercising muscles. This oxygen demand is fulfilled by increased blood flow(cardiac output).Cardiac output is equal to stroke volume( amount of blood ejected out of left ventricle during each contraction) into heart rate.

Stroke volume of an individual is more or less constant. Therefore to fulfill the increasing demand of blood flow (cardiac output), heart rate is increased.
Therefore there is increase in heart rate during excercise which may last for 30-45 minutes even after exercise.

As your resting heart rate is normal there may not be any relation between your heart rate and your thyroid status.It is advisable to do free T4, TSH to confirm the same.
