What Causes Flashes Of Light In The Line Of Sight?

I am 83 years old and in good health. I have been having flashers for the last several years. It looks like heat waves radiating from an asphalt road on a hot summer day. They can appear in any quadrant and they are in both eyes whether I close them or not. The flashers can be in any quadrant ie. upper right, lower right, right or left of center and at times they appear to be moving to another direction. I don t lose vision but vision is distorted at the flashers. They last for as long as ten or fifteen minutes. When they are over every thing goes back to normal. Sometimes I will go for weeks or months without anything going on and then they return. The only side effect is a slight headache afterward.
