What Causes Finger Muscle Twitching And Fingertips Numbness?

I am a 41 year old Caucasian male with no significant health problems. I m id decent but not great shape, I run and work out but not often enough. For about three weeks I have had a periodic muscle twitch in the index finger of my left hand, and/ or the web between that finger and thumb. It happens 7-8 times a day and lasts a minute or two, but is getting more frequent. The last two nights I also noticed mild numbness in the fingertips of my left hand, when I woke up, which went away with flexing/stretching. Minor symptoms, but progressing and freaking me out a bit. Any thoughts?
