What Causes Fast Heart Beat And Discomfort Chest Area?

I was asleep , when my husbands extremely loud voice yelled in the middle of the night at the cat. I was startled out of sleep with a racing heart. This was about 40 min. ago. My chest is still very uncomfortable and I can not sleep although I am sleepy. What do you recommend doing?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Greetings! Answer: The body responds to stress, worry, and anxiety in the same ways that it responds to fear and excitement by activating the fight or flight. At a chemical level, your body releases a series of hormones that make you hyper-alert, focused, and energized, and this chemical cascade causes increased heart rate, respiratory rate, and perspiration. Just relaxing , gentle walk for some time and having a bottle of water should relax you and reduce your heart beat!
