What Causes Excessive Sleeping And Tiredness?

Hi. I am speaking on behalf of my boyfriend.
He is 24 years old, tall, athletic, normal health. He works mon-fri 6 hours day, does phyiscal activity 2-3 a week for 3 hour periods. But his problem is on weekends all he does is sleep, the entire weekend. He does drink every night, sometimes in heavy amounts, which plays a part in his lack of sleep. He is worried that something is wrong with him but will not see a doctor. My main concern is why does he sleep all weekend and still feel tired during the week days?

Hello
Welcome here.
I can understand your concerns.

Chronic alcohol intake can disrupt sleep architecture. The deep sleep stage is not attained or its duration is decreased. Even though the person is sleeps adequately, but still feel drowsy and fatigued next morning due to this.

A reduction in alcohol intake is needed for him.
He might need benzos to prevent withdrawal symptoms and gradually his sleep architecture will normalize.

Hope this helps.
Thanks.
