Hi,

It's very hard that your child is not able to have peaceful sleep during the night.

The most common cause for tonsillar enlargement is due to upper respiratory tract infection (Viral /Bacterial).

But usually, both tonsils will be enlarged. Children, less than 5 years can have multiple episodes of upper respiratory tract infection and tonsillar enlargement. When tonsils are enlarged, it can obstruct the airway, there by causing sleep disturbances. If the symptoms are very frequent and disturbing your child's routine life, then it needs to be evaluated.

There are few causes for unilateral enlargement of tonsils, such as infection and inflammation. I would suggest you get a pediatric ENT surgeon opinion, who can guide you further.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nirubhan Bharathy, Pediatrician
