What Causes Elevated WBC Count, Tiredness And Heart Palpitations?

3 weeks ago, My mother (almost 80) had low platelets at 17,000. She had spontaneous bruising, bleeding nose and gums.... She was admitted to hospital and had a 6 day course of prednisone. The platelets rose to approx 515,000 but within 8 finishing the treatment they were back down to 300,000. She now has been experiencing heart palpitations, weakness, tired (sleeping like a rock). Here white blood cells are rising....Her bloodwork was normal in October. Does this sound viral? or ITP or autoimmune or a leukemia. We're On another note she is losing vision in her right eye - eye doc said macular degeneration - but could this all be related?

Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I a so sorry to hear about your mother is going through. With skyrocketing WBC numbers, she needs to be investigated for a possible leukemia. These numbers are to high and cannot be explained by an infection. I will suggest that you get consulted and evaluated by a hematologist. At the end of this, you would get a definitive answer to all these lingering questions.

I hope this helps. I wish you well and thank you so much for using our services. Feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.
