What Causes Elevated WBC And Platelet Count In A Person With Thyroid Disorder?

I had my thyroid out last July and therefore get my blood tested every few months. In Oct., Dec. and this May my WBC and platelets have been high. My lymphs absolute is also high. My iron is borderline low but in Dec. and Oct. my iron was very very low and taking supplements has helped. What are the potential causes of my wbc and platelets being high? Thank you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
As far as I know, there is no direct link for high WBC and platelets with thyroid removal. However, I need to know the exact counts to decide whether it is high enough to be clinically significant. Some time, the reason behind non-specific high counts during blood tests is that you do not drink enough water before the blood test and your blood is concentrated. I presume you give your thyroid blood tests after over night fasting and you are also not drinking water till the blood test is over, thinking it to be a part of fasting. I have seen a lot of patients like this. However once again I would like to tell you that, these are only possible theories and I cannot give an objective comment on your question without the actual values of the WBC and platelets which you are calling it as High
