What Causes Ear Pain While Suffering From Cough And Congestion?

Good evening...my son 16 has a sinus infection so for the past day he has been spitting up a bit/coughing to clear his throat and just recently came to me because his ear is in a tremendous amount of pain. He feels like it was ruptured from clearing his throat? Is that possible? I just gave him a couple of Advil to ease the pain...
