What Causes Ear Pain After Blowing The Balloons?

sir, it began exactly a year ago in the month of march when i blew a balloon in my son s birthday. I experienced pain under the left ear. Nothing serious happened but after couple of months i started experiencing discomfort below the same ear. Sometimes there is a slight pain right inside the ear. I travel every weekend to the hills and i spend my weekdays in th plains. I have not been to th doctor yet as its not so acute. May i know what is it due to? Should i get worried? Is something very serious?please let me know.

Hi,

Well, blowing balloons can create lot of pressure and the air can fill up in the middle ear. The air pressure can cause the ear drum to get stretched or ballooned outwards. It can cause you severe pain. Climbing up the hill or moving uphill can also cause difference in air pressure inside and outside the ear, it can cause pain and blockage also.

But as you say pain is under the ear, then either you are not able to locate the pain correctly or possibly it can be radiating pain from deep inside the ear. As the pain is recurring, you should once get checked by an otorhinolaryngologist or an ENT physician. For now I would suggest you to avoid anything that can cause pressure changes inside and outside the middle ear like blowing balloon, hearing loud sounds, blowing nose, using headphones etc.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
