What Causes Ear Ache, Head Ache And Whooshing Sound In The Ear?

This past summer I got water in my ears from swimming and as far as I can tell I never got it out of my right ear. I have always been prone to ear infections but never to the point of having tubes inserted. Since July, about 6 months ago, I've had an on and off earache in my right ear. I saw a doctor about two months ago when it had been hurting for over a week and she said it was fine. In recent weeks it has been feeling worse and worse as the days progress and I get a whooshing sound that follows my heartbeat when I lay down. It stops when I lay on my right side, but it gets so loud that I can't sleep when I lay on my left side (naturally I avoid it). The last few days have also brought headaches radiating from my ear and behind my right eye as well as pressure in what I believe is my right sinus cavity. I've had nasal polyps in the past and they have been removed twice. The first time I had 1-3.5in polyp removed as well as 7-1in polyps. I know that I struggle with allergies and I normally take Flonase and Zyrtec daily, but I have not in a little over a month simply because I ran out and haven't gotten more, but I know that even while I was taking them daily I had the ear ache.I've had an inner ear infection before and it brought similar ear pain and headaches, but the pressure and whooshing sound are throwing me off. Should I see an ENT and request a nasal endoscopy? I was going to see my primary care doctor, but should I see a specialist instead of or in addition to my regular doctor? I've finally given in and taken tylenol for the pain which is something I usually don't do because I just deal with it and let it run its course, but this ear ache has overstayed its welcome and I'd like to know what is going on in my ear. Thank you

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain it seems that the earache is due to Ear infection and the whooshing sound seems to be due to fluid behind the ear drum..
If there is whooshing sound that follow your heartbeat it can be due to Pulsatile Tinnitus..
Headache and pain behind the eyes seems to be due to Sinus infection or Sinusitis..
I would suggest you to consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like Otoscopic examination and other investigation like MRI Scan ,Audiometry etc can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly..
You can be advised to take a course of antibiotics, anti inflammatory painkiller, anti allergics, Oral as well as nasal decongestant..
In case if there is flluid behind the eardrum and does not resolve with medicines you can be advised to go for surgical drainage of ears..
You can also be advised to take medicines like Diazepam to ease in sleeping..
You should also avoid swimming and diving..
Avoid exposure to loud sounds..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
