What Causes Dizziness, Chills And Severe Headache?

I began to experience the symptoms of a cold or the flu. It came on very quickly within a few hours I went from feeling dizzy and light-headed to chills and nausea accompanied by a strong headache. I decided to lie down and then my neck, back and knees began to ache slightly. I took some Vicks Nyquil Flu liquid medication. I am currently taking Elavil for peripheral neuropathy which at present only involves the lower legs and feet. I wear white crew socks to just below the knees to assist in cirulation and keep down any swelling. I m quite active since I enjoy hiking and this helps the circulation. I also have Crohn s but am currently meds free for six years now. The next day I went to work, took a dose of Vicks Dayquil this time and felt fine. I arrived home that late afternoon. Removed my socks and was shocked to find the inner side of my right lower leg very bruised and almost purple with purple spots all over. There was no particular pattern but some were grouped together others not. After a few hours the darkness of the bruising seemed to lighten somewhat and I massaged my leg as well. I had heard so many stories of diabetics losing limbs from PN that I immediately began to massage and get some circulation going perhaps to make this disappear. The next day I did not wear socks but wore Crocs instead. I also did not use any more of the Vicks meds. Would using Vicks cause this reaction? Is this an allergic reaction or a medication interaction or what? I know you can t diagnose but any information would be helpful. I m five hours from a medical facility. Thank you.

Hello,

Dizziness, chills & headache are symptoms of a cold. If you take an overdose of cold medicines you may feel dizzy. Though it does not look like the side effect of Vicks Nyquil Flu liquid medication or Vicks Dayquil.

However, if you are allergic to it, stop taking it to stay on the safer side. You have a history of Peripheral neuropathy & presently you are having purple bruises on the legs with purple spots here & there.

If you wear socks, make sure they fit you snugly but not tight to prevent blood circulation.

Purple bruises may be indicative of Peripheral Artery Disease(PAD). You are suggested to visit a GP & get clinically examined.

You may have to go through few tests (Ankle-brachial index, etc) that confirm PAD along with Imaging tests like CT angiography, MRI angiography, etc.

You will be treated (statin therpy/anti platelet therapy / surgery) accordingly for PAD if tested positive; depending on the severity of pathology detected.

Very sensitive screening is required. Treatment will depend on the evidence rating & the severity of your clinical symptoms also.

Avoid smoking, cut on alcohol or addictions if any. Control blood glucose level if diabetic.

Elavil is Amitriptyline, a tricyclic antidepressant that is used to help reduce the neuropathic pain(pain that occurs due to nerve damage).

You may be referred to a Neurologist to confirm & treat PAD. Get Nerve conduction tests & nerve biopsy done & treated before the symptoms get worse.

In the meantime take Vitamin B6, B12, Folic acid supplements.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
