What Causes Distended Stomach?

I am 21, and have never been to a GYN. I haven't had my menstrual cycle in 8 months, and all HPT's were negative. About 5 months ago my abdomen started getting larger, and people have asked if I was pregnant. It hasn't gotten any larger since then, but it hasn't gotten any smaller. I get pretty bad pain on my lower right side, and it feels "full." It also hurts to have intercourse, and my whole right side of my belly feels harder than normal. I also took EC roughly the week before my LMP was due just to be "safe" after the one time we had intercourse that month. Also, I start feeling muscle spasms and twitching in the same areas of my abdomen. I was wondering if this was a big ovarian cyst? Or if the HPTs were wrong.
I'll be seeing an OBGYN next week and scheduled for an ultrasound and I'm just scared to go. I also want to figure out what it could be before I go.

Hello,

With a history of details you have given about amenorrhea, bloating, looking pregnant and so on can be due to one of the following reasons:

- As you have mentioned this can be enlarging ovarian cyst and needs early diagnosis as will be discussed below.

- Pseudocyesis meaning there is no pregnancy but there can be symptoms related to pregnancy. This is totally a psychological condition and thus needs counselling if required.

- Any other condition related to small or large intestine, subacute intestinal obstruction.

Hence I would advise you the following:

- Consult your Doctor for clinical evaluation, an actual examination and investigations of tests of blood, urine and stool.

- Ultrasonography of abdomen.

- Specialist's opinion if required.

All these will give the exact diagnosis and a proper line of management which you should go by as soon as possible.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant
