What Causes Dilated Left Atrium With A Pacemaker?

What would cause severely dilated left atrium in a 77 yr. old woman who has never been told that she has even mild or moderate atrium dilation. Could the fact that I had serious Peritonitis a year and a half ago have caused it? I ve had a-fib most of my life and have a pacemaker. My doctor just brushes my questions away.

Hi welcome to HCM.
Atrial fibrillation is known to cause a dilated left atrium due to asynchrony between the cardiac muscle fibers and ultimate pooling of blood within the chambers. This has to treated promptly or else can lead to pulmonary edema.
Since a cardiac pacemaker is placed your are now relatively risk free.I advice you to have a check on your cardiac reserve through a screening 2 dimensional echo of the heart.Consult your cardiologist for further queries.
Thank you
