What Causes Diarrhea While On Abilify And Zoloft?

Have a 6 year old on abilify and Zoloft. Some autistic and other traits. many symptoms of uncontrolled and self destructive behavior i.e. pulls own hair out in large patches. The current question is diarrhea/loose stools and more accidents lately. Any reason to suspect the medications? I know Zoloft has this as a possible side effect, but has been on the meds a while before these symptoms started occurring. Thanks

Hi dear. Thank you for trusting HealthCareMagic. I have understood your questions and worries. I hope your son is in good condition right now.

Zoloft is an antidepressant contains sertraline. In children it can be used for depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, anxiety, or panic attack. It's true that diarrhea/loose stool is one of its side effects, about 13-24% patients felt that. The others are headache, sleepiness, nausea, dizziness and many more. Actually the side effects come depends on dosage and usually it can diminish gradually. But if it persists, better contact your doctor.

Abilify contains aripiprazole as an antipsychotics medicine. In children it can be used to treat autistic disorder include irritability, self injury, mood swings, tantrum. But diarrhea is not caused by abilify. Common side effect are weight gain, nausea vomiting, anxiety my dizziness, sleep deprivation etc.

You should look for medical help if your son get allergic reactions with Zoloft or abilify, such as hives, swelling on face, lip or throat, and difficultly breathing. Please call your local doctor if the diarrhea get worsen, also if there's worsening symptoms of his mood and behavior, severe panic, anxiety or self injured. You can't stop or decrease the dosage without doctor's permission. It can make withdrawal syndrome that may harm your son.

I hope this can help to resolve your worries. If there's anything you need to know more, please let me know and we can discuss it in HealthCareMagic. Send my greetings to your son. Take care.

Regards,
dr. Asti Yuliadha
