What Causes Diarrhea And Pain In The Lower Abdomen?

For approximately 2-3 weeks I have been having stabbing abdominal pain to my LLQ and occassionally to my RLQ, and any time I eat food that is not bland it gives me severe abdominal cramps followed by diarrhea, I cannot pinpoint one food that it happens with its pretty much everything, but bland food the pain is not as bad. although I have not had any significant weight loss, probably because I m hungry and just deal with the abdominal pain afterwards if I m really hungry, as for drinking the only thing that does not give me problems is water or Gatorade. I had blood work drawn about 2 weeks ago and my wbcs were 22.8, which I had received as steroid inj in my knee so could have been the culprit, since then have had it repeated twice and its now down to 9.8 which is a high norm but trending down, I have spoke with my doc about this but guess he isn t too concerned since I am not losing weight, but its painful and embarrassing, what do you recommend I do or who should I follow up with? at first I was thinking IBS but now am more concerned with possible gall bladder. what do u think?

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Watery loose stools are in most cases caused by dietary causes or infectious ones. If this is caused by diet then he should try to rest more and switch to a diet of clear liquids. Drink water, juice, bouillon and weak tea to avoid becoming dehydrated. Replace lost fluids and electrolytes with sports drinks. Avoid coffee or soft drinks that contain caffeine, since caffeine increases the loss of water and salt. If you have nausea in addition to diarrhea, take very small sips of fluid frequently and suck on ice chips. He also may consider over-the-counter medications such as bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol) or loperamide (Imodium). In cases of infectious diarrheas, you should do microbiologist testing of stool and see the exact microbe and then antibiotics can be used additionaly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
