What Causes Diarrhea After A Parathyroid Surgery?

I have been having loose stools and bowel movements 2-3 times every day. I had parathyroid surgery two months back. No pain, no bloating, no gas, just an urge to have bowel movement . This has started sfter my surgery. I also see undigested food in stools.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I understand your concern.

Having loose stools with an urge to have a bowel movement (bm) is suggesting alteration in intestinal flora.

If this started following the surgery, could have been due to meds used during your hospitalization time (especially when it comes to antibiotics).

I advise to:
- increase fluids intake
- take tasectan or pepto bismol for diarrhea
- take probiotics to stabilize intestinal flora

If this won't improve your symptoms, further tests are required:
- stool examination and stool culture
- abdominal ultrasound
- malabsorption/food intolerance tests

Wish fast recovery.
