What Causes Dark Stools After Taking Iron Supplements?

I take prescription iron supplements and have had dark stools which I know is normal. However, I recently started taking Alli and now my stools are no longer dark despite still taking the iron supplements. Does this mean my body is no longer absorbing the iron?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Iron supplements will cause black stool which is harmless. It does not mean that the body is not absorbing the iron, it is just a side effect.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi
