What Causes Dark Brown Discharge After 3 Weeks Of Delivery?

Is it normal to have dark brown discharge, I gave birth four weeks ago. Just want to make sure it is not any sign of infection. The bleeding completely stopped at three weeks after I gave birth and all of a sudden returned as a really dark brown color.

Hi,

Dark brown discharge usually indicates the collected blood in the uterus. The possible causes are:
- From the healing uterine endometrium
- If you are breast feeding the baby, sometimes fluctuation in the different reproductive hormones can happen that can lead to spotting which can present as dark brown discharge.

If the discharge is not persisting, not associated with any smell, white discharge, fever, etc. the possibility of infection is less. Usually this type of discharge will subside soon. If it persists, better to consult your gynecologist once and get examined. Clinical examination and ultrasound can help in finding the possible cause of the problem and treatment can be planned accordingly.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
