What Causes Coughing Up Blood After Biopsy Of Thyroid Gland?

My grandmother recently had a biopsy done on her thyroid area and has been spitting up blood occassionally ever since. She never coughed up blood before the biopsy. The doctor who took the biopsy (by needle) said it looked "clustered" and looked benign. Is coughing up blood normal after such a procedure?

Hi,

I can understand your concern regarding to your grandmother's health. Fine needle aspiration can cause perforation of the larynges in very rare cases, especially when is not done under ultrasound examination and not performed by a specialist. She needs a laryngoscopy to see the larynges from inside. Usually it is self limited within a few days.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mirjeta
